1. Windows 10

Open Settings and select Personalization. Now click Themes and then Desktop icon settings. Now make sure the Recycle Bin is ticked and hit OK.

How to Recover a Single File from a Deleted Folder

As we mentioned earlier, in case the file you want to restore is inside a folder that you have deleted, then your job will be slightly more difficult. You can use the already mentioned method of restoring the entire folder, however, this is not the most efficient way of doing things. Instead, you can use the Command Prompt to restore only the file(s) you want. Here is how:

Step1 Launch Command Prompt

Open Command Prompt by clicking Start and typing “cmd” in the search box. Then, type cd\ and hit Enter. Now type cd $Recycle.Bin and once again hit Enter. If you see an error message, that could be due to the fact that different versions of Windows have slightly different commands. In this case, go back to Step 2 and try entering cd Recycled or cd Recycler. Now type dir /s hit Enter. You will now see a list of all your deleted files, including the files in your deleted folders.

Step2 Search for the Folder

Unfortunately, the folder names will not be the same as in the Recycle Bin. Folders will start with the name “DIR” and its files will be listed below them. Look for the folder that you think contains the file(s) you are looking for. Navigate to the folder by first typing cd, then Space and then keep pressing Tab until you find the directory you are after.

  • Now once again enter cd, hit Space and by using the Tab key locate the folder containing your deleted file(s) and hit Enter.
  • Type dir to view the deleted files inside the folder. You will now have to use the copy command to move the file out of the Recycle Bin and into a folder of your choice.
  • Type for example “copy jacobphoto.jpg C:\Users\Jacob\Desktop to copy the file to the named location.
  • Hit Enter and if everything went well, you should see the following command displayed: “<#> file(s) copied”.

How to Prevent Windows from Automatically Deleting Files

If you find that every time you click delete – accidentally or not – the file is immediately moved to the recycle bin, then you should check your computer settings to set up a confirmation before deletion. This way, each time you click delete, you will first have to confirm your decision before Windows removes the file. Right-click the Recycle Bin and choose “Properties”. From the list of options look for something along the lines of “Display delete confirmation dialog” and make sure the box next to it is checked.
