Ways to Recover Corrupted PowerPoint Files

A virus or a sudden computer crash can cause PowerPoint files to become corrupted. Being unable to access the PPT file you worked so hard on can be frustrating, but it is definitely not a sign that you need to start again from scratch. There are a few different ways to restore PPT files to their former glory, so let’s take a look at a couple of those methods.

1. Recover PowerPoint file Using Microsoft Word

Word documents, Excel documents, and PPT files are all prone to corruption, which is why it’s good to know how to use Microsoft Office to recover said files. Microsoft Office should be considered your first go to tool when trying to recover corrupted PPT files. Since the application is used to process word documents, it will not get back your original PPT file, but it will recover all the texts included in the corrupted document. You will likely need to recreate the slides in PowerPoint, but having the text that you worked on is certainly and excellent start, and can save you a ton of time. Let’s look at how to recover a PPT file in Microsoft Office:

  • Open Microsoft Word, and select “File” > “Open”, select “Recover Text from Any File” from the file type drop down menu.
  • Click the file name of the PowerPoint presentation and hit the “Open” button.
  • Send the file to Microsoft Office PowerPoint using the “Send To” option on the File menu. You should now have the text components used in your PPT file.

2. Recover PowerPoint File from Temp Folder

It may be possible to get back your original PPT file by looking inside the Temp Folder. Your work is automatically saved as you go when creating a PPT file. When the document is automatically saved, the file is placed inside the Temp Folder. Before you get too excited, it should be noted that you will not always be able to get your file back by accessing this folder. It is definitely worth a shot, though, so allow us to explain how to get your PPT file from the Temp Folder.

  • Using the search tool on your PC, look for the temporary file. PowerPoint presentations will be listed as PPTfilename.tmp. To look for all PowerPoint files in the Temp Folder, ass ppt*.tmp into the search box to get a list of the PPT files currently residing there.
  • Click he one you are looking for and rename it if needed. Be sure to use the .ppt extension if you do so.
  • Open the file and save it to your folder of choice. You will have now recovered your PPT file from the Temp Folder.

We certainly hope that the two methods we have outlined above will help you recover your deleted or lost PPT files. If both of those options fail, then we recommend that you try Disk Recovery, as we believe this to be the most effective and powerful file recovery software on the market. There is certainly no harm in trying the free options first, but you can save some time and effort by installing AceThinker Disk Recovery. Doing so will give you real peace of mind, as you will know that any files lost or corrupted in the future can be quickly recovered.
