How to Fix No Audio on Computer Issue

Whether you are using external speakers or built-in ones, having no sound on computer is one of the most frustrating issues you can face. Sound is essential for watching movies, videos, playing games and for many other apps you use on a daily basis. When you have encountered such problem, the first thing you must have done is type “I have no sound on my computer” into Google. The fact you cannot hear sound coming from your computer is due to a wide range of reasons. Some can be caused by outdated drivers or missing software or wrong cable plug to the audio port. In this article, we will provide troubleshooting for computer sound problem. These methods are applicable for not only Windows 10 but older versions of Windows. Read on and follow the steps carefully and hopefully you will have your sound back in no time.

Solution 1. Check the connections

Most of the time, when there is no audio on computer, there is a chance that the external speaker itself is damaged or broken or unplugged from the PC device. First thing to check are the speakers, make sure they are working by checking if they are plugged into the power socket if they have one. If not, check if the 3.5mm jack of the speakers are plugged in the right place. Also check the volume on the computer to be sure, make sure that it is not on mute.

Solution 2. Update Sound Card Drivers

Another thing to check, are the drivers that are installed for the speakers. An outdated driver can most of the time, be the cause of the no audio issue on your PC device. Make sure that all drivers are up to date. To check, go to the “Start” menu, in the search bar type “Device Manager” and launch it. Among the options, look for “Sound, Video and Game Controllers” and click it. A list will appear and look for the sound card on that list. Simply right-click your sound card and select “Update Driver Software”.

Solution 3. Run Windows Troubleshooter

If the two previous solutions were not able to fix Windows 10 no audio issue, then consider using Windows built-in tool to troubleshoot audio playback. To run the tool, type “Troubleshoot” on the search bar. Open the troubleshooter and click “Playing Audio”. In the window that appears click “Run the Troubleshooter” and the tool will run a scan to detect and fix audio issue.

Solution 4. Set Correct Audio Device as Default

Another common cause of not being able to hear the sound, is that you have the wrong audio device set as default. Right-click the volume icon in your taskbar, and select “Sounds”. Go to the “Playback” tab. Here you will see the list of available audio devices connected. Click on the name of the one you want to use as default and click “Set Default” below it.

Fix Sound on Earlier Version of Windows

If you own an older version of Windows, for example Windows 7 or 8, the steps you have to take to resolve no sound coming from computer issue will be slightly different. But the solutions will be essentially the same. Read on to find out the best troubleshooting for computer sound problem on your Windows 7 or 8 computer. Make sure to always check the cables and electric plug if they are in their respective slots. If none of these is the problem, try the methods below.

Solution 1. Update Sound Card Driver

The sound card requires an up to date sound driver to work properly. If your sound card driver is not up to date, then you will probably run into lost sound on computer problems. To get the latest version of the audio driver, click “Start” and do a system search on “Device Manager”. In “Device Manager” click on “Sound, video and game controllers” to expand it. From the list right-click your sound card and select “Update Driver Software”. If there is a new driver available, the program will downloaded and install it for you.

Solution 2. Set the Default Audio Device

If you are using external speaker, then you must have that speaker set as default to be able to use it. Click the “Start” button on the taskbar, type “Sound” in the search box and click on the result. In the “Sound” window, click the “Playback” tab. Here you will see various audio devices. The audio device that is set as default is marked by a green tick. To change the default audio device, simply click on the device you wish to set as default and hit “Set Default” accordingly.

Solution 3. Use The Built-in Troubleshooter

If none of the above mentioned methods seems to work for you, then you can try Windows’s very own troubleshooting tool to restore sound on computer. If this tool manages to detect the problem, it will either fix it for you or offer some kind of useful advice. Open Control Panel and under “System and Security” click “Find and fix problems”. Next, click “Hardware and Sound”, followed by “Troubleshoot audio playback”.
